Merit Scholarship

The announcement of the Merit Scholarships for the Academic Year 2021/22 was published in the June 28, 2023 University Gazette (79th special issue, 36.c piece 2022/23).

The legal basis for this is contained in the Study Grants Act (“Studienförderungsgesetz”) 1992 in sections 2 to 4 (beneficiaries), sections 18 and 19 (duration of entitlement, grounds for renewal) and sections 57 to 61 (merit scholarships).

Eligible for application are students with Austrian citizenship as well as equivalent EEA citizens, stateless persons and refugees as defined by § 4 StudFG, who are enrolled in a regular study program at the University of Graz and have achieved excellent academic results in accordance with the study regulations.

A merit scholarship may not be less than EUR 750,- and not exceed EUR 3,600,-. The scholarship is awarded under private sector administration by the Dean of Students. There is no legal entitlement to a scholarship. The award is independent of the social need of the applicant.

October 1, 2022 until September 30, 2023

For Bachelor's and Master's Programs applies:

  • Compliance with the entitlement period: The assessment period must be within the entitlement period (this is the legally stipulated period of study plus one additional semester). The entitlement period can only be extended for good cause (§§ 18, 19 StudFG).
    Attention: The eligibility period for the Merit Scholarship has been extended by one additional semester.
  • Grade point average of the subject examinations, course examinations and Bachelor’s and Master’s theses according to the curriculum of no worse than 2.0.
  • Evidence of positively completed academic achievements according to the curriculum of at least 48 ECTS credit points in the assessment period (course and subject examinations from compulsory subjects and restricted elective subjects as well as theses).
  • The applicant has consistently demonstrated good scientific practice during the assessment period and, in particular, has not used any unauthorized aids in examinations or written papers.

 

For the Doctoral Program in Business, Economics and Social Sciences applies:

  • Completion of the Doctoral Program within the assessment period (in compliance with the entitlement period)
  • Assessment of the Doctoral Thesis with the grade “Excellent (1)” or “Good (2)”
  • Grade point average of all course examinations not worse than 1.5
  • Assessment of the Doctoral Exam and Doctoral Thesis Defense with the grade “Excellent (1)” or “Good (2)”.
  • The applicant has consistently demonstrated good scientific practice during the assessment period and, in particular, has not used any unauthorized aids in examinations or written papers.

 

For Supplementary Programs applies:

The credits of the supplementary program will be considered when applying for the regular study program, the extension of which it serves (e.g. Leadership - Acting responsibly in Society and Business). An application exclusively for a supplementary program can only be submitted if the following requirements are met:

  • Positive completion of at least 34 ECTS credit points of the supplementary program in the assessment period
  • Grade point average of the examinations according to the curriculum of 1.5 or less
  • Adherence to the duration of study specified for the supplementary program

 

For all Study Programs of the School of Business, Economics and Social Sciences applies:

  • Free elective courses and Career-oriented Internships are not considered as evidence of outstanding academic achievement.
  • Recognitions will be considered for evidence of outstanding academic achievement only if the date of the recognized examination and that of the recognition fall within the assessment period.
  • Courses for which the positive evaluation is “successful completion of a course” will be used for the evidence of outstanding academic achievement only if and to the extent that there are not sufficient other courses with an evaluation according to the grading scale.
  • If the study program was completed in the months of October or March (see graduation date of the respective degree certificate), then it is still considered to have been completed in the preceding summer or winter semester.

The call for applications is made once per academic year.

Applications may be submitted by students by the following deadline:

September 25, 2023 until October 31, 2023

The application is submitted electronically via UNIGRAZonline after appropriate identification. During the application period, the application “Merit Scholarship” is displayed in UNIGRAZonline.

If electronic submission is not possible due to a lack of an active student account, please submit the application can also be submitted using an application form sent via email to sowi.services(at)uni-graz.at.

An application for a Merit Scholarship can only be submitted to one School. If a student is enrolled in more than one study program, the application must be submitted to the School where the highest number of ECTS credit points was earned. Only one application can be submitted per study program.

An application is also possible if the program was completed before the end of the academic year or if there is a valid leave of absence.

  • Attachment to the Merit Scholarship
  • Confirmation of Registration
  • Passport
  • Bank Data
  • Evidence of belonging to the eligible group of persons (confirmation of registration, permanent residence card, etc.)
  • Recognition notifications, if these do not exist in UNIGRAZonline.
    If no grades or semester hours appear in the recognition notification, the respective certificate must be uploaded.
  • Certificates (transcripts) of examinations that do not exist in UNIGRAZonline or certificates from other universities.
  • Evidence of any delays in the duration of studies as defined in §§ 18 and 19 StudFG

Missing documents will not be requested. Incomplete applications or applications with missing and/or deficient documentation will not be considered for scholarship award. Please note that it is not possible to process your application without the “Attachment to the Merit Scholarship”.

The awarding of the scholarships is made by the Dean of Studies.

If the number of applications that meet the requirements is greater than the number of scholarships to be awarded, the applicants will first be ranked according to their grade point average. If the grade point average is the same, the applicants will be ranked according to ECTS credit points or the number of semester hours completed.

Applicants will be notified of the decision in writing. There is no legal claim to the award.
