Belonging for Single Migrant Men

Single men form the largest group within global migration flows but face the harshest challenges to integration and belonging. In this lecture, Prof. Yurdakul will present her ERC Advanced Grant project MENBELONG, exploring the experiences of single migrant men including Syrians in Turkey, Mexicans in Canada, Turks in Germany, Myanmarese in Thailand, and Venezuelans in Chile. Drawing on intersectional and comparative insights, she will discuss how these men navigate belonging beyond family networks and formal integration processes.

Prof. Yurdakul is Georg Simmel Professor of Diversity and Social Conflict at Humboldt University of Berlin and former Director of the Berlin Institute for Migration and Integration Research (BIM). Her research focuses on gender, migration, and citizenship, and she is the author of The Headscarf Debates (Stanford University Press), among other works.
