Managing the Customer Education Paradox

Customer education or the extent to which firms are seen as providing customers with the skills and abilities to utilize critical information is often considered a valuable augmentation to a firm’s service offerings. Yet, many firms are hesitant to invest in customer education efforts for fear that it will equip customers with the skills to shop around and possibly switch providers. The purpose of this research is to understand the circumstances under which customer education ties customers more closely to a firm or encourages customers to leave. Specifically, our studies show that an understanding of this paradox of customer education lies in the specificity of customer expertise that is built as a result of customer education initiatives. The results demonstrate that educating customers for firm-specific expertise leads to increased loyalty, while building market-related expertise may decrease customer loyalty. A critical practical implication of our findings therefore is the need for managers to understand the varying effects of enhancing customers’ firm-specific vs. market related expertise and to consider customer education initiatives proactively.

Strategic Public Enforcement and the Dual Role of Investor Litigation
Stefan F. Schantl und Alfred Wagenhofer

We develop an economic model to investigate strategic interdependencies that arise between public and private enforcement of investor protection regulations through reputation concerns in public enforcement. Private enforcement by means of investor litigation assumes a dual role: it deters misconduct by firm insiders and it serves as a monitor of public enforcement. We find that increasing the strength of private enforcement always decreases insider misconduct, whereas increasing the monitoring intensity of public enforcement with strong reputation concerns exacerbates (mitigates) insider misconduct if the litigation mechanism is weak (strong). Social welfare can decrease not only because enforcement costs increase, but also because the deterrence effects of both mechanisms are weakened. We discuss implications of these results for the optimal configuration of public enforcement and investor litigation mechanisms.

Book-Tax Conformity and Strategic Effects on Tax and Financial Reporting

I use a game-theory approach to analyze potential effects of the mandatory level of book-tax conformity as a joint outcome of financial reporting standard setters and tax regulators on strategic auditing and reporting decisions. Distinguishing between reporting incentives of managers with relatively high tax or financial reporting incentives, I find that a one-book system as desirable tax characteristics, whereas the results regarding financial reporting quality are ambiguous. Therefore, I show when and how one- and two book systems can be desirable and contribute to the debate about desirable characteristics of different book-tax conformity and their policy implications. The results highlight the importance of jointly determining reporting standards in terms.

Does Investor Risk Perception Drive Asset Prices in Markets?

What people perceive as risk clearly goes beyond variance. Several papers have shown that, e.g., probability of loss plays a more prominent role in perceived risk than does variance. We are the first to explore how individual risk perception influences prices and trading behavior in a market setting by exposing subjects to a number of differently shaped return distributions which they then trade on. We first elicit subjects' individual risk perceptions, finding results in line with earlier papers. We then let subjects trade assets with these return distributions on a continuous double auction market. In the markets we observe active trading and prices strongly driven by average risk perception. While standard finance theory predicts identical prices for most of our assets we find average prices to vary by up to 20 percent, with assets perceived as being less risky trading at significantly higher prices.

The Effect of Repatriation Taxes on Investment Efficiency

This paper examines the effect of repatriation taxes on the investment decisions made by foreign subsidiaries of multinational corporations (MNCs). Using a global sample, we provide evidence that a subsidiary’s investment is less aligned with local growth opportunities when its parent faces repatriation taxes on its earnings. This negative effect of repatriation taxes on investment efficiency is weaker when information asymmetry between parent and subsidiary is reduced, and when the parent has a stronger need for the subsidiary’s earnings to be repatriated. We confirm our results and establish a causal relationship using natural experiments in the U.K. and Japan, which both reformed their international tax systems to remove repatriation taxes in 2009. Our results suggest that repatriation taxes distort MNCs’ internal capital markets and reinforce agency conflicts, leading to economically less efficient investment decisions at the affiliate level.

The impacts of global climate change on Germany's international trade: A model analysis of heat related productivity losses
Nina Kittel, Martin Jury, Birgit Bednar-Friedl und Gabriel Bachner

Germany is heavily engaged in international trade ‑ the trade in goods constituted more than two thirds of German GDP in 2016. While there is strong empirical evidence that European countries are sensitive to international climate change impacts, such as global price volatilities triggered by extreme weather events, impact studies have so far ignored impacts transferred from outside a country’s borders. In this paper, we therefore investigate the climate change impacts transmitted by foreign trade to Germany by looking at temperature increase and associated labour productivity losses. We use a global computable general equilibrium model to assess the macroeconomic impacts for the German economy. The time horizon of the analysis is a thirty year period around 2050 and we consider two future climate scenarios (RCP4.5 and RCP8.5), two different socio-economic scenarios (SSP2 and SSP3), and three different global climate models (HadGEM2-ES, NorESM1-M and IPSL-CM5A-LR). We find that the lion’s share of impacts on German trade flows and GDP arise outside of European economies. In terms of sectors, imports to Germany decline strongest for service sectors, while exports decline strongest for industry sectors. Moreover, both imports and exports are redirected from non-European to European countries.
