Limit Orders under Knightian Uncertainty

An investor who maximizes subjective expected utility will generally only abstain from trading in an asset if the market price equals the expected return exactly. However, few people participate in the stock market. [Dow and da Costa Werlang, Econometrica 1992] show that an ambiguity averse decision maker might abstain from trading in an asset for a broad interval of prices and use this fact to explain the lack of participation in the stock market. We show that when markets operate via limit orders, all investment behavior will be observationally equivalent to the behavior of an agent maximizing subjective expected utility; ambiguity aversion has no additional explanatory power.

Temporal Density Extrapolation using a Dynamic Basis Approach

With modern business processes and applications being ever more digitized in recent years, the data available to analysts changed from stationary ”pools” of data to non-static ”streams” of data with the potential to change as time goes on. But how can statistical inference and prediction be done when the data itself is subject to change? Following a brief introduction into statistical learning we will present our ongoing research into how machine learning can not only be done despite changing data but how this very change can be modeled, anticipated and used for better prediction. By providing a functional model of the data distribution in a non-static scenario our work not only enables easily interpretable descriptive analysis of the data but also provides the basis for statistical inference to inform and support decision making.

Does Tax Exemption of Retained Profits Provide Investment Incentives? - Evidence from Croatia

We analyze the Croatian tax exemption of retained profits (TERP) that was in place 2013-2016. Croatian corporations were allowed to deduct profits of the previous year from the tax base if they were retained and added to the company’s subscribed capital. This regulation was intended to create a lock-in effect and to stimulate investment and employment. We use firm-level data from 6,458 Croatian firms (treatment group) and 3,025 Slovenian firms (control group) with 85,347 observations to investigate whether firms used TERP and whether the desired investment and employment effects occurred. We find that Croatian firms on average indeed used TERP. Compared to the control group, Croatian firms significantly increased their subscribed capital after the introduction of TERP. The increase of subscribed capital varies substantially between different owner types. The strongest reaction can be observed for firms held by a single individual shareholder. Croatian firms that increased their subscribed capital also significantly increased investment in fixed assets, but only after a time lag of two years. Similarly, capital-increasing firms significantly increase employment. Furthermore, we find that liquidity considerations do not have a major impact on investment in fixed assets. Our results contribute to the knowledge on the effects of investment incentives. Based on our results, we conjecture that TERP tends to be an inefficient device for stimulating investment.

Industrial Data Analytics along Supply Chains: Opportunities and Risks

Following the idea of ”industry 4.0” requires an intensive sharing of data along supply chains. The rise of cheap sensors and cyber physical systems combined with the ability to process ”Big Data”, creates several new business opportunities. Sharing of data with other companies in the supply chain is useful to improve quality of products, optimize logistics, improve maintenance strategies and even to create new products or business models.  However, sensitive information or sensitive knowledge can be extracted by data analytics from the shared data. Many companies experienced a fear of unwanted knowledge spillover, especially of critical knowledge. So far it is very difficult to predict what others can extract out of the shared data, especially if data can be linked to other data. Examples for opportunities as well as for risks of industrial data analytics along supply chains are discussed in the talk and selected research topics of the new center for Business Analytics and Data Science (BANDAS) will be presented.

Akzeptanz von MOOC-Zertifikaten in der Personalauswahl

MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) are freely available online courses that have no entry barriers and are aiming at unlimited participation. MOOCs commonly offer some kind of credentials, which ranges from digital badges, to certificates of participation and awarding regular college credits. While the use of MOOCs for corporate training gains popularity among employers and is appreciated by employees it could be assumed that MOOC certificates are also appreciated as informal proof of additional qualifications and the willingness to life-long-learning in the personnel selection process. Nevertheless, there is a lack of peer-reviewed literature to proof this. On the other hand, employees assume that employers do not honor their MOOC certificates as they see them not linked closely enough to job-related learning. Acknowledging this gap in literature, the aim of this study is to answer the following research question: What is the perception of employers about MOOC certificates presented in the personnel selection process? As MOOCs are still relatively less known among employers, well-educated and technology-related start-up entrepreneurs are most likely to have an opinion on MOOC certificates in the personnel selection process. Therefore, this explorative research draws on a sample of five start-up entrepreneurs from the city of Graz, Austria, that have been interviewed through semi-structured interviews. The results support in several ways existing assumptions drawn up by online editorials and opinion pieces. First, they show that employers are skeptical about the validity of MOOC certificates. While they do not implicate for them that the applicant is familiar with the topic stated on the certificates, they appreciate them as a sign of self-sufficiency and self-propulsion. Hereby is does not make a difference if formal certificates are presented or the applicant just claims to have attended some MOOCs. Second, they draw a difference between young and well-educated entrepreneurs who know MOOCs and partially use them for their own training and older entrepreneurs with less formal education that do not know MOOCs.

A new perspective on the benefits of slack building under participative budgeting

In contrast to authoritative budgeting, participative budgeting may improve the superior’s knowledge and increase the subordinate's motivation, but often comes at the costs of padding budgets and slack building. Consequently, most analytical studies identify slack as one of the major costs of participative budgeting that significantly reduce its benefits. Despite these research findings, participative budgeting is widely used in corporate practice. In this paper, we identify a beneficial effect of participative budgeting that has been neglected so far in analytical accounting research. In particular, we argue that slack might have benefits for the firm if the impact of participative budgeting on the firm's supply side is taken into account. We employ a tractable adverse selection model to capture the interactions between budgetary slack and decisions made inside the firm with the firm's choice of production quantity and the supplier's input price decision. We demonstrate that slack building induces an increase in the costs of production, but at the same time might soften supplier pricing. Overall, the interplay between frictions within the firm that are due to agency problems and the supplier's pricing response crucially affect the firm's choice of participative budgeting over authoritative budgeting. The main insight of our paper is that an exclusive focus on intra-firm aspects of budgeting might miss important effects of participative budgeting. It seems fruitful to consider the interaction between external stakeholders and a firm's budgeting approach in future empirical research.

Money Knowledge or Money Myths? Results of a population survey on money and the monetary order
Klaus Kraemer, Luka Jakelja, Florian Brugger und Sebastian Nessel

People are using money in everyday life in ubiquitous ways. And they know that money has quite and multiple meanings in different social contexts, depending on the situation in which it is used. But However, what do people know about money, money creation, money backing and the institutional foundations of the monetary order? To close the blatant research gap on people's knowledge about money and the institutional foundations of the modern monetary system, we carried out a standardized population survey (n = 2000) in Austria in autumn 2017. Firstly, we review literature on the sociology of money with special regard to money knowledge and monetary institutions. We argue that the sociology of money made progress in analysing the usage of money and the institutions, which produce money but neglected an analysis of ordinary people's knowledge of the monetary order. Secondly, we review a strand of Financial Literacy research which has empirically assessed people's knowledge about mathematical and financial issues but not about money or monetary institutions. Thirdly, we suggest a definition of money and give an outline of central institutions to understand the monetary order. Fourthly, we explain our methods and data. Fifthly, we present central descriptive, bivariate and multivariate empirical findings of people's knowledge of money and monetary institutions with regard to socio-demographic and socio-economic factors (gender, age, education, employment status, household income). Finally, we discuss our empirical findings against the backdrop of existing studies. We conclude by arguing that it is money myths and not money knowledge which that may explain the widespread usage and acceptance of money in everyday life.
