Marketing Media Mix Optimization and the Quadratic Knapsack Problem
Ulrich Pferschy and Joachim Schauer

In this contribution we present an optimization model for deciding on the best selection of advertising media to be used in a promotional campaign. The effect of each single medium and each pair of media is estimated from the evaluation data of past campaigns taking into account a similarity measure between the attributes and goals of campaigns. The resulting discrete optimization model is a Quadratic Knapsack Problem (QKP) which we solve by a genetic algorithm. Then campaign budget is assigned to each selected advertising medium based on a statistical estimation from previous campaigns. Our optimization tool is integrated in the marketing management software solution MARMIND. The Quadratic Knapsack Problem poses also interesting questions from a theoretical point of view. Therefore we study the complexity of QKP on special graph classes and derive several approximation results for important graph classes. Most notably for the related densest k-subgraph problem on planar graphs we can significantly improve the currently best known approximation ratio of 2 and show that QKP is already NP-complete on 3-book embeddable graphs.

Current Account Adjustment in the Euro-Zone: Lessons from a Flexible-Price-Model

Modelling Diffusion Processes in Economic Systems: From Populations to Agents
Andreas Rainer und David Haas

This article is based on the original suggestion of Kurz (2008) to combine classical and evolutionary thinking to model the diffusion process in the presence of technical change as a specific aspect of economic dynamics. On the micro-level, imitation and firm growth are the driving forces of the diffusion process. Growth is initiated by the distribution of the use of the surplus of production either for consumption or for accumulation, or by death and entry of firms. Firms die if their mode of production is outdated and unprofitable, and new firms enter the market if a new technology enters the scene promising high extra profits. The latter process is one driven by the rent-seeking behavior of firms. The same holds true for existing firms which switch to the innovation and therefore boost its diffusion, which is the process of imitation. Firm entry, investment into growth and imitation are firm decisions, which follow some routine of "choosing what technique to employ at a certain time" (Nelson & Winter, 1982, p. 15) differing from another kind of routine, namely the "production technique whose operation is tightly constrained by machinery or chemistry" (loc. cit., p. 15). Since these decisions can become arbitrarily complex, if one takes into account learning, networks, social as well as economic circumstances and (goods and labour) market mechanisms, it might be convenient to bear down on simulation studies and the methodology of agent-based modeling (Pyka & Fagiolo, 2007; Kirman, 2011).

It is the aim of this paper to provide a linkage between the population approachof evolutionary economics in the tradition of the classics, and agent-based modeling to study economic diffusion processes. This is accomplished by categorizing models by its time and state space, which can both be either discrete or continuous: Continuous time and state space is dealt with by evolutionary game theory (Weibull, 1997). The resulting replicator dynamics is a consequence of profit-seeking behavior of infinitesimally small firms, pursuing some production process and looking for alternative, more protable, processes. As an aside, the evolution of the system is also formulated for discrete time replicator dynamics as outlined in a similar context by Steedman & Metcalfe (2011) which can be understood as a growth process of a finite number of firms. In a second step, the state space is taken to be discrete. In this case, firms imitate, leading to time-continuous respectively time-discrete Markov processes. Based on this preparatory work
finally the toolbox of agent-based modeling (ABM) is utilized to implement the economic ideas outlined in the preceding sections in terms of replicator dynamics.

Financial markets in macro models

I propose a new open economy macroeconomics model with a financial market that allows to choose among three different assets: equity, bonds and bank deposits. Individuals do not differ with respect to their consumption preferences but in their costs of gathering information, their attitude towards risks and their preference for liquidity. They consequently differ in their assets choice if they are lenders. That yields endogenous portfolio weights in the aggregate which are determined jointly and strongly affected by the asset-specific interest rates. Demand for financial means is also asset-specific with firms asking for equity and loans and governments preferring bonds. Since the return on the assets differs, income differs for the individuals according to their asset choice. Their savings can nevertheless be aggregated and support a general equilibrium with a differentiate financial market.

Group Activity Selection Problem
Andreas Darmann, Edith Elkind, Sascha Kurz, Jérôme Lang, Joachim Schauer, and Gerhard Woeginger

We consider a setting where one has to organize one or several group activities for a set of agents. Each agent will participate in at most one activity, and her preferences over activities depend on the number of participants in the activity. The goal is to assign agents to activities based on their preferences. We put forward a general model for this setting, which is a natural generalization of anonymous hedonic games. We then focus on a special case of our model, where agents' preferences are binary, i.e., each agent classifies all pairs of the form "(activity, group size)" into ones that are acceptable and ones that are not. We formulate several solution concepts for this scenario, and study them from the computational point of view, providing hardness results for the general case as well as efficient algorithms for settings where agents' preferences satisfy certain natural constraints.

Why popular music helps to understand state-building processes. A comparative study of the national habitus.

The paper argues that popular culture provides information about the state-building process from a perspective of ordinary citizens. Thus, the role of violence and emotions in the context of state-making and social resistance can be better understood. The paper is based on a qualitative content analysis of conflicts between state authorities and criminal rebel heroes described in American and Austrian folksong lyrics. The theoretical framework used for this study is related to Elias’s concept of the "national habitus" that supports an understanding of both the structural and the emotional aspects of the state-building process.

Clustering Customers in the VRPTW with multiple service workers
Gerald Senarclens de Grancy, Marc Reimann

In ever growing urban areas, space becomes increasingly valuable. Hence, even smaller stores servicing local customers may not be able to provide dedicated parking spaces. This lack of space to park, even though encouraging alternative means of transport, constitutes a problem for the stores' suppliers. Virtually all routing applications as well as academic papers implicitly assume that it is possible to stop at the desired destination. However, this assumption doesn't hold if there are no parking spaces available that could fit a delivery truck.

Given these circumstances, distribution planning requires clustering nearby customers around known parking locations. Deliveries from each parking location to its assigned customers occur by foot. These lead to long service times at each of the clusters. However, long service times in conjunction with time windows can lead to inefficient routes as nearby customer clusters with overlapping service times may not be connected. As a consequence, assigning additional service workers to each vehicle is a strategy to reduce service times and hence permit more efficient routes. The trade-off between paying additional workers to reduce costs for vehicles and driving creates a new decision problem called the vehicle routing problem with time windows and multiple service workers (VRPTWMS).

Prior work by Pureza et al. (2011) assumes that the customer clusters are given input data. As this does not hold in reality, there is need for an algorithm combining customers to clusters with a parking space in each of them. To tackle this issue, we identify relevant characteristics, parameters and issues when combining customers with time windows. We then introduce and systematically evaluate clustering strategies for obtaining high quality solutions to the VRPTWMS.
